Dealing with spilt mercury.

چکیده
Metallic mercury is used in schools and research laboratories, in medical and scientific departments, in dental surgeries and as a cathode in the electrolysis of brine. In ophthalmic theatres it is used in weights which are placed over the eye after a local anaesthetic injection is administered. It is volatile and therefore spilt droplets can pose a hazard to health, especially in a confined space.

Electronic Sphygmomanometers: Are They a Source of Mercury in Hospitals? To the Editor: The letter by O’Brien1 on the article by Jones et al2 and the subsequent response by Jones et al1 continue to confine debate to areas already established by O’Brien,3 ie, finding a suitable replacement for the mercury (Hg) sphygmomanometer. However, 2 recent studies finding that aneroid gauges are accurate i...

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of acrylic refractive prism and Fresnel membrane prism on stereoacuity in intermittent exotropia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Stereoacuities of fifty-two patients (mean age, 12.4 years; range 6 to 45 years) with intermittent exotropia were measured using the Titmus and TNO stereotests, while they wore prisms of varying power on nonfixating eye or evenly on each eye. ...
متن کاملThe History and Current Status of Otter Research within Canada Based on Peer Reviewed Journal Articles
In Canada, there are two species of otters, the river otter (Lontra canadensis) and the sea otter (Enhydra lutris). The river otter is considered to be plentiful and ranges throughout a large part of Canada. On the other hand, the sea otter is classified as of Special Concern and only small translocated colonies are found along the coastline of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. The scienti...
متن کاملBioremediation of toxic substances by mercury resistant marine bacteria.
Bioremediation of toxic substances includes microbe-mediated enzymatic transformation of toxicants to non-toxic, often assimilable, forms. Mercury-resistant marine bacteria are found to be very promising in dealing with mercury, and a host of other highly toxic heavy metals and xenobiotics. In the present studies we have shown that the Pseudomonas aeruginosa CH07 (NRRL B-30604) has been able to...
